Submitting an Abstract

All abstracts must be submitted via the Online Submission System. New users should create an account on that page. Please use a valid email address to register since email confirmation is required. Once logged in, please supply your profile information.

In order to begin the submission process, click on “+ New Abstract” button and follow the instructions below.

Abstract Information

Please enter the title of your presentation and an abstract (300 words maximum) into the text-boxes. Please do not upload your abstract as attachments.

Event Information

Please select the symposium name you would like to submit to under Topic. Full Call for Abstracts for each symposium is available at http://spiefocus2019.azurewebsites.net/call-for-abstracts/.

Author Information

Please fill in the information of all authors. To add more authors, click on the blue “+” button. To delete the last author that has been entered, clock on the red “-” button.

Presenter Information

Please fill in the information of the presenting author(s). Importantly, select your preferred presentation type: select “Poster” if you prefer to present a poster, or select “Projector” if you prefer to present an oral talk with projected slides. All submissions preferring Poster presentation will be honored. A portion of the submissions preferring Projector presentation (oral) may be assigned to be presented by posters. All submissions are subject to review by the session chairs and/or peer reviewers, and the conference reserves the right to reject a submission if incomplete or bearing any research misconduct. Submissions selecting an invalid presentation type will be treated as poster submissions.

Usually only one presenter is needed per presentation. However, if more than one presenter is required, you can add their information by clicking on the blue “+” button.

Presentation Formats

Contributed oral presentations (projector presentations) should be around 20 minutes long including a brief Q&A session. A poster session for all technical symposiums will be held in the evening of Saturday.

Conference Registration

All attendees are required to register for the conference regardless of abstract submission. The registration fee is $0 for 2019 SPIE FOCUS: Light and Matter. For more information, please visit the Conference Registration Information Page.

FOCUS Student Travel Award

The Conference is pleased to distribute the FOCUS Student Travel Awards to students (including undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD-track) and postdoctoral researchers participating in the conference programs. This award will include one night of guest housing on Saturday and travel reimbursements up to $100. Applicant selection is based on the quality of the submitted abstract, academic background, and financial needs. We particularly encourage students from primarily undergraduate institutions and research-wise underrepresented programs to apply.

In order to be considered as an applicant to the FOCUS Student Travel Award, please fill out the Application Form and attach your current CV after the form as one single PDF file. When submitting your conference abstract in the submission system, upload this PDF file as the attachment. Submissions that satisfy both of these conditions will be considered as a valid entry: (1) has a completed Application Form and applicant’s CV in the attachment, and (2) the applicant is the submitting author. Each individual can only apply through one abstract submission. If multiple applications from the same individual are received, only the last submitted one will be honored. The application deadline is the same as the abstract submission deadline.

Best Presentation/Poster Awards

During the meeting, the best contributed oral or poster presentations will be selected and honored with the Best Presentation/Poster Awards at the end of the Saturday sessions.
